What is vegan fish (and why we are so enthusiastic about it!)

If you’re unfamiliar with vegan jargon and have never before delved deep into it, you might wonder how fish can be vegan. Let us explain. Vegan fish is a plant-based alternative to traditional fish, made without any animal ingredients.

The idea with vegan fish is to mimic the taste and texture of fish in a way that’s kind to our oceans and suitable for everyone who prefers to avoid animal products or needs to avoid them due to allergies. We use advanced techniques to match the dining experience of eating fish but completely fish-free!

Vegan fish vs. vegetarian fish: what’s the difference?

While both vegan and vegetarian fish offer alternatives to traditional, animal-based fish, there’s a significant difference: vegetarian fish can still contain animal products like eggs or milk. Of many products, you may assume them to be vegan, but often, they contain an ingredient that kicks them off of the vegan checklist.

Paprika chips are a good example. You might imagine they are just innocent potatoes, salt, paprika powder, and oil. Yet, when you check out the packaging, chips frequently contain milk powder. This ingredient helps adhere the flavouring to the product and create a creamier taste experience.

Fish that is marked vegan, on the other hand, is completely free of animal ingredients, making it suitable for vegans and those who are allergic to certain animal products such as fish, eggs, or dairy.

Vegan vs. plant-based: what’s the deal?

Our Vegan Fisherman fish is also 100% plant-based, which is not the case with every vegan product. Vegan doesn’t mean the same as plant-based because vegan products can also contain ingredients that are not plant-based. A good example is margarine. It is usually vegan, as it contains no animal products. Yet, it is often not 100% plant-based because it may contain artificial colours, flavours, or emulsified chemicals not derived from plants.

Vegan Fisherman products are vegan, vegetarian, and plant-based, which automatically makes them suitable for people with an allergy to animal foods: win-win-win!

The taste of the sea

Smart thinkers may have wondered what gives fish its distinctive taste. They do not initially have the ‘fishy taste’ when you sink your teeth into the flesh of a fish: they get it by eating algae. For that reason, it would be better for you to take algae oil instead of fish oil if you want to take omega fatty acids as a supplement: this way, you benefit directly from those crucial oils instead of eating fish!

At Vegan Fisherman we have imitated this taste like a pro by using a mix of algae and herbs. This mix gives our vegan fish that authentic, salty, salty, delicious sea taste. We add a delicious crispy breadcrumb layer to some products prepared according to the fishmonger’s authentic recipe for the perfect finish. This makes it look even more like the fish you already knew!

How is Vegan Fisherman’s vegan fish made?

Now that you know what vegan fish is, you may want to know how it is made! Our vegan fish products start with a base of NON-GMO rice grains, which are transformed into a substance with a similar structure to that of fish fillets. We add oils for flavour, essential omega 3, 6, and 9, and algae for that distinctive fishy taste. This is combined through a secret process that ensures the perfect balance between taste, texture, and nutritional value.

Why eating plant-based is essential.

You might hear and read about it more often in ads, at the supermarket, or in the news: adding more plant-based items to your diet is good for your health. Eating fewer animals is also essential for our planet. Plant-based diets reduce the risk of chronic diseases and have a lower environmental impact. (Read our blog here about how Vegan Fisherman can contribute to achieving sustainability goals).

By eating and using fewer animal products, we help protect the oceans and prevent them from being completely emptied of their inhabitants. We must fight to preserve nature and the well-being of our children and future generations, even if sometimes we feel it may be too late.
